6 Inventive Ways to Repurpose Old Sweaters

As a mixed rags and credential clothing supplier, we understand the value of used clothing. We know that even one item of used clothing can make a difference to someone. We’ve sent millions of pounds of used paired shoes, bulk used clothing, and bulk linens to developing nations where they can be distributed to local people, offering an affordable option for the basic necessities we often take advantage of.

Yes, this is a post about how to repurpose old sweaters, but before we get into the fun of clothing, we want to remind you that clothing isn’t meant to be–and shouldn’t ever be thought of–as disposable. Please wear and use your clothing responsibly. Remember that textiles are not trash and whenever possible they should be repurposed, re-used, handed down, or donated–never thrown away. Thank you!

And now to the fun:

First up, our favorite project: Throw Pillows. The possibilities here are virtually endless. Sweaters come in all shapes, sizes, patterns, colors, and thread types. The ones pictured below were made by Cami of Tidbits. In addition to the step-by-step tutorial, she has an ingenious tip for avoiding wavy seams (which can occur due to the weave and fiber type of most sweaters).

Next, check out this sweater lamp shade by Andrea of Luna+Reece Art. This is a no-sew project which makes it universally appealing to all DIYers, no matter your skill level. She re-covered a pendant lamp shade, but a “sweater-ized” table lamp shade would look just as fetching!

Bonus: In the background you can see a sweater-covered vase. Clever!

Who would’ve thought to make Christmas stockings out of an old sweater?? Kelly at Imperfect Homemaking, that’s who! These stockings have a whimsical, country cottage feel to them. We love that they coordinate but don’t exactly match.

Hats, Mittens, and Scarves–if you’re judicious with the fabric, you might even be able to make all three out of one sweater!

This cowl scarf is adorable, don’t you think? This project from Come on, Ilene was part of a month-long challenge she gave herself to not spend any money on her projects. Well done!
