Blue Jeans for Your Face: From Mixed Rags to Sunglasses
Blue Jeans for Your Face: From Mixed Rags to Sunglasses, a blog post by EcoGoodz
Remember that pair of blue jeans you donated not too long ago? They could soon become a pair of sunglasses.
Mosevics are an up-and-coming sunglasses brand and manufacturer from Cornwall, UK. After years of material and process exploration, they launched their first (and the worlds’ first) range of Solid Denim eyewear on Kickstarter in 2015. They now have an array of Solid Denim eyewear available through their website. (source)
Through a unique process involving resin (a viscous substance that hardens into varying degrees of pliability, depending on the type of resin), layers of denim are fused together, machine cut, then hand finished to create a truly unique and (for lack of a better word) awesome pair of sunglasses.
Mosevic takes discarded and damaged jeans and use the reclaimed fabric in our latest collection of Solid Denim eyewear. They recycle jeans of all shapes, sizes, colours and textures. Each pair of sunglasses is built from layers of these different denim fabrics using their unique, handcrafted process in their workshop in Cornwall, UK. From flashes of colour and subtle blue gradients to an explosion of textures each and every pair of sunglasses is completely unique.
Mosevic transforms these unloved jeans into sunglasses by infusing layers of the denim with a carefully selected resin to create Solid Denim. Denim is tough. Solid Denim is even stronger and it has all the properties needed to build high quality, tactile and striking eyewear. Yes, it really is denim all the way through! (source)
Layers of denim are fused together with a specialized resin which hardens, allowing the fused layers to be precision-cut into the glasses frame.
Multiple pairs, ready for assembly and hand finishing.
Each pair is hand finished.
What do you think of the end result? You can see the layers of denim at the top of the frame.
This company has successfully reinvented these blue jeans–essentially unwanted mixed rags–into an entirely new product which can be worn and enjoyed for many more years. We applaud their ingenuity and craftsmanship!
