That used to be a blanket??

Being a company that values unwanted goods such as used shoes, used clothing, and bulk linens, it should come at no surprise that we are enchanted with the Amsterdam-based company Wintervacht, which makes and sells beautiful coats for men and women from vintage wool blankets.

What happens when a blanket outlives its usefulness? It's made into a jacket by Wintervacht! Featured in a blog post by EcoGoodz, a mixed rags supplier

From their website:

Cold winter weather can make it hard to want to get out of bed, but Wintervacht has answered your wish to stay wrapped up in blankets. Two young Dutch designers are creating elegant clothes from old blankets and curtains, giving new life to textiles that have otherwise lost their original purpose.

Yoni van Oorsouw and Manon van Hoeckel met in design school. They took sewing classes from Yoni’s mother. At the time, Manon was living in a house without heating, and would sleep under three heavy old blankets. When her sewing teacher, Yoni’s mother, suggested she make a jacket, she was inspired to use the blankets.

There were many different color combinations available, but our favorite men’s bomber jacket is this one:

As with all their products, it’s made from a vintage wool blanket, which means it’ll keep you toasty warm, even if it gets wet.

It was way more difficult to choose a favorite from the collection of women’s jackets available. There were so many fun colors, styles, and fabric patterns! We finally decided on this one (as did a lot of others, apparently, because it’s sold out!).

One of the other fun features of these blanket coats are the fastening pins. Call us old-fashioned, but there’s just something fun and unusual about fastening your coat closed with a pin rather than buttons or a zipper. Using a pin allows you flexibility in how and where you want to fasten your coat.

Why wool?

  • As a natural fiber, wool is biodegradable
  • Wool functions as a temperature regulator, so it can protect the body in both cold and warm conditions
  • Wool keeps you warm even when it’s wet
  • Wool is the only natural fiber that resists flaming and will normally self-extinguish once the flame source is removed.
  • Wool is sustainable and renewable!

We think the better question is, why not wool?
