Whether you live in an apartment or a house, there is much you can do each month to conserve energy and reduce waste. Apartment Guide created this simple month-by-month infographic to help apartment dwellers specifically, but it’s still releveant for house-dwellers as well.

Here’s some additional information to complement what the infographic suggests:

Wrapping your water heater can save you 7-16% annually in energy savings.

Just like insulating your walls or roof, insulating your hot water tank is an easy and inexpensive way to improve energy efficiency and save you money each month. If your water tank is new, it is likely already insulated. If you have an older hot water tank, check to see if it has insulation with an R-value of at least 24. If not, consider insulating your water tank, which could reduce standby heat losses by 25%–45% and save you about 7%–16% in water heating costs—and should pay for itself in about a year. Cleaning your refrigerator coils will save you energy and money. “The purpose of refrigerator coils is to dissipate heat, not suck up electricity—or cash—out of your wallet. But that’s what happens if you don’t clean off those bad boys once in a while.” (source) It’s recommended that you clean these at least once a year.

Changing your air filter (or having your landlord do it if you’re renting) regularly can also save you money. Your furnace draws air through the filter, warms it, then blows it back into your home via the vents. When your air filter is dirty, your furnace has to work harder to draw air through.
